Little Bit of History

History of the hotel and the neighborhood

Mola Hotel is located in the Bunjakovec neighborhood, in the central area of Skopje about 1 km (0.6 miles) from the city center. The Bunjakovec neighborhood, like Debar maalo and Maalo Kolonija, came to exist as a result of the modernization and Europeanizaion of Skopje and its spread to the right side of the river Vardar. Bunjakovec was built after the First World War, and it takes its name from one of the largest land owners, Bunjak.

Mlin Balkan was part of the neighborhood Bunjakovec. The mill (‘mlin’ means mill in Macedonian) was built in 1922, next to the railway. By the mill, a villa of the owners and a large park were built. In 1943 the buildings were destroyed in the air bombing, and some of the buildings were demolished in the late fifties of the XX century, after which today's Parliamentarians Club, hospital and other modern facilities were built.

The hotel was built in 2011 and operated up to 2014 under a different name. In 2014 the hotel changed ownership and its name. Inspired by the stories about the beauty of the villa and the park of the Mlin Balkan, in 2014 it was renamed Mola (mill in Latin). Mola Hotel evokes pleasant associations also in other languages: spring in Portuguese, rest in Turkish, apple in Albanian.
